This precious Oriental gem grows in wild, secluded mountains. As a plant of long growth cycle—one of the longest among oil crops—it takes a whole year to grow from flower to seed. The harvest period is October to November. It is hand-harvested, which is extremely hard work. Thus, each camellia seed is precious, containing natural nutrients.
Inheriting the spirit of old craftsmanship, the camellia seeds are cold pressed into highly nutritious camellia oil. Natural oil made from camellia seeds is the most delicate deep-moisturizing elixir suitable for both consumption and skin care.
Ancient artisans found ways to utilize tea seed cake, “cha gu”, which is the residue from oil extract. Containing natural saponin and theophylline, cha gan, extract of cha gu, produces degreasing foam and is an eco-friendly cleanser.
Made from 100% fresh, carefully-selected camellia seed, this plant oil is very high in monounsaturated fat. It retains all the camellia nutrients such as vitamin, tea polyphenol, and chlorophyll. It is suitable for postpartum diet, weak stomachs, cardiovascular disease patients, recovering patients, and the elderly.
Suitable for damaged, permed, or dyed hair. Naturally-extracted cha gan gently removes grease and dirt. Precious camellia oil deeply moisturizes hair; pure mulberry skin and Asiatic pennywort extracts effectively moisturize hair roots, giving hair a silky quality. It is fragrance-free, using essential oils such as natural bay leaf, geranium, and lemongrass.

During the 80s, family-style factories were the mainstay of Taiwanese economy and led to economic prosperity. Founder Chao Chih-ming began producing detergents for restaurant and vendor use.
To build quality life for family and provide consumers a better cleaning solution, Mr. Chao founded the company, initiating the formation of Chatzutang.
Chao Chih-ming won countless praise for inventing the Cha tzu dishwashing liquid. Chao Wen-hao took over his father’s business, planting roots across Taiwan for Chatzutang to grow.
Chao Wen-hao believed that a brand is recognition, a symbol of spirits and values. He thus registered the Chatzutang brand and invested in brand marketing.
With profits pursued and production costs cut after the crisis, Chao Wen-hao started to assess the brand value and decided to take Cha Tzu Tang out of the processing market to go its own direction.
Chao Wen-hao visited cha tzu farms and farmers across Taiwan, hoping to revive cha tzu culture and value of land.
The first Chatzutang contract farm was situated in Penglai Village, Miaoli County. By way of contract farming, camellia oil and tea seed meal were purchased at a high price to offer cha tzu farmers a more stable life.
5 product series of oil, hair, body, family, and gift products were created, promoting the passion for cha tzu culture through Taiwanese arts and crafts.
We are devoted to local sustainable development projects, hoping that cha tzu products will bring to the world our creative workers as well as rich cultural history.
Large green fields of lush camellia bushes were once the most common sight in Taiwan's mountainous regions.
Farmers who spend most of their lives in the mountains understand the wisdom of growing things naturally.
They insist on organic methods to care for camellia seeds, fertilize the plants, harvest, transport, store, and produce oil.
And they have been doing so for decades.
They have learned to use camellia seed in daily life.
Camellia oil can be used as food or to maintain the body, and cha gu can be used as a household or body cleanser.
It is rare to retain such wisdom for use in daily life.
With declining markets, the emergence of chemical products, and a loss of heritage in camellia cultural assets, many old farmers and scattered camellia farms in Taiwan face difficulties to survive.
To allow camellia seeds to continue growing strong in Taiwan's forests and to give cha tzu farms a stable living quality, Cha Tzu Tang visits camellia farms across Taiwan and fosters a caring relationship with cha tzu farmers.
Cha Tzu Tang has supported camellia farms in various places and preserved the many precious cultural values. In 2011, Cha Tzu Tang began leasing its first farm in Penglai Village, Miaoli County. The owner of the farm, Mr. and Mrs. Lee told us, “We cannot let such good crops disappear from this land.” Despite today’s weakened camellia seed market, the Lees have protected their crops. Mr. and Mrs. Lee have a deep emotional connection with camellia seeds and recognize their value, and have worked to continue the camellia seed culture. Every discovery of a prosperous camellia farm is a gift from heaven to Cha Tzu Tang. That means there is a group of people on this land that is willing to sweat and contribute with a smile to the preservation of Taiwanese values that once prospered.
We believe that with people’s hard work, a better life can bloom.
